Frequently Asked Questions for the ENG1 Medical
How do I book my ENG1 appointment?
Our ENG1 appointments are scheduled via the online booking page.
A confirmation email will be sent immediately on booking your ENG1 appointment. This will confirm the fee paid, time and date of the ENG1 appointment and the specific requirements for the ENG1 medical.
Do I need an ENG1 Seafarer medical?
You need an ENG 1 certificate if you’re a seafarer, in charge of a ship, or serving on a merchant ship or yacht. The medical usually takes 30 minutes to complete and costs £115. ENG1 medicals are regulated by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and further details can be obtained by clicking here.
What happens during an ENG1 Seafarer medical assessment?
The Approved Doctor will perform the medical checks requested by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. This will involve:
Checking your height, weight, blood pressure and doing a physical examination.
Checking your eyesight (before and after you put on glasses) and colour vision testing.
Checking your hearing.
Testing your urine for glucose, blood and protein, indicative of diabetes and kidney problems.
Listing any medication you’re currently taking on the medical form.
Asking about your previous medical history (these questions are on the medical form).
If you pass all aspects of the ENG1 medical, you will be given your certificate at the end.
What do I need to bring to my ENG1 appointment?
This is a reminder of what you will need to bring to your ENG1 seafarer medical:
Original Photo ID e.g. driving licence, passport or discharge book i.e. not a copy.
Your previous ENG1 certificate (if you have one).
Your glasses (do not wear contact lenses as they are removed for the eyesight test).
A full bladder for a urine specimen. Our reception will give you a specimen pot on arrival and direct you to the bathroom.
Any hospital letters and/or a list of your current medication.
Hearing Requirements - please avoid loud noises for 16 hours prior to your appointment.
